Almere’s claim to fame is that it’s the oldest iron distance triathlon outside Hawaii, albeit never under the Ironman brand. The first edition of the Holland Triathlon took place in 1983. Nowadays it’s called Challenge Almere-Amsterdam.
As expected from The Netherlands, the course is panflat (and below sea-level). However, fast times are totally dependent on the strength of the prevailing ‘west’ wind in the open and exposed landscape.
Almere has hosted 2 World Championships and 7 European ITU Long Distance Championships. The most recent European Champs in 2019 was won by Matt Trautman (SAF) in a course record of 7:50:15 and Yvonne van Vlerken (NED), who holds the women’s course record of 8:51:13
